So, NBA star LeBron James is moving teams or something. What a crazy and exciting development, I’m pretty sure no one has ever left a team to get more money, I wonder what will happen to the NBA now!! I’m so very glad that is all I’ve been hearing about every time I see a news article, really. In all honesty, I think it’s crap. I enjoy basketball, don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun sport to watch and follow, but why is the community making such a huge deal over one player? Since when has a player, especially one who plays for that a team that has no real emotional significance to him (except for maybe of course where he made his ride), been worried about sticking to a team out of loyalty?

LeBron no doubt views basketball as a career, considering it’s his livelihood, and as such seeks to earn as much money as he can from it. Would you turn down a job offer for the exact same job as you have now, but paid much more and surrounded you with more quality individuals? Come on people, wake up, and stop thinking that LeBron James made some sort of massive betrayal, he’s just a human being, and he looks out for his own interests, just like you and I would.

Activision Blizzard, the masterminds behind the incredibly successful MMORPG, World of Warcraft, have recently announced they would be adding a functionality to their battle.net and worldofwarcraft.com forums that would effectively destroy all anonymity from their forums. The RealID system would show the real name of every character on every account that belonged to that individual, meaning no matter what character or game account they were on, anyone would readily have access to their real name.

This sparked a massive negative response within the community, and the newly announced features were ridiculed everywhere: forums, web comics, blogs, WoW discussion boards, and every communicative outlet for gamers essentially. This uproar caused Blizzard to rethink their design, and quickly announced they would be removing the identifying aspects of RealID, instead making those details available only to people that the customer would allow. Way to go team.

Droid X’s will be shipping with locked bootloaders? Whaaaaaaat, in a completely surprising development, phone manufacturer Motorola released that the follow-up to their popular flagship phone the “Droid”, the “Droid X”, would be shipping with a locked bootloader. The phone’s software, based on the Google Android operating system, is open source and extensively customizable, which makes it extremely “hackable” from an enthusiast standpoint.

The main appeal of these phones to many, is their lightweight software design, and also the large amount of customization that could come from them via custom roms. The developer market for Android is huge as well, and many open source developers often frown upon restricted hardware.

So what sparked this change from Motorola? “Securing the software on our handsets, thereby preventing a non-Motorola ROM image from being loaded, has been our common practice for many years”, yet this clearly wasn’t the case with the original Droid, which was heralded for its flexibility and customization abilities. So why would Motorola bother sticking to a poor practice that would no doubt enrage its customers? Thoughts?
